The Great Tomorrow - Part I: Venice
This large drawing (102 x 72 cm, graphite pencils on paper) is the first one I've made on the theme of cities of the future, and there was no doubt that I would start with my hometown of Venice... but I wanted to approach it from a different angle: what if, rather than ending up sinking and submerged, the city is standing in a desert-like environment and the water has disappeared from its canals and the surrounding lagoon? The world population is growing, the global climate is changing, and access to water - that we give for granted - might change from a basic right to a precious commodity, and perhaps wars will be fought like it's been happening with oil... Going back to the art bit, I've started working on a second large drawing, the only link with this Venice one is the black & white of graphite (I love pencil drawing:) and the landscape is very dry... Other than that there's no reference to any existing city as it's more of a fantasy, "moving" city...
