At the heart of what I do is visualising: creative briefs, concepts and ideas - stories that need to be told. I love designing characters and illustration, storyboarding, animatics and animation. But not all at the same time…

I enjoy the creative space that sits between illustration and animation. Visual storytelling: in motion, and frozen in time. Creating narratives and entertaining the viewer. Above all, I love creating characters and their worlds.

I think the most important thing I can bring to the table is a vision, on top of verbal and visual communication skills and a knack for developing character storylines. The vision will change and be unique according to the inputs I receive, the specific qualities of the project, the discussions with the people involved in it. And then the vision becomes visual content, the design assets that help tell the story.

I strive to create artwork that grab the attention of the viewer, that inspire and engage your audience on an emotional level - make them smile and feel good. This is what great artwork and storytelling should do, like in our early memories of watching an animated film, or when we appreciate a well-constructed piece of music and it connects to something deep inside of us.

Animation is beautiful because it uses so many different elements to make its point, but of course illustration too can tell a story, as an instance still-captured in time. And storyboarding is brilliant because you help to stage the scene of a script - not just in terms of choice of shots, camera angles or action within the frame, but in the most expressive way for that specific story. It’s visualising in 2D space (the frame, the paper or that portion of screen) action that happens over time in a 3-dimensional space. Exciting!

And character design is very gratifying because you try to find the essence of a character in simple forms, with just a few lines. Plus it's a job where we are allowed to dream and be the child-creator. For me all these communication/art forms are not about realism, but rather about the interpretation of a theme or a subject through the personal approach and style of the artist. Again, it's all about vision and storytelling, to captivate the viewer and create that little bit of magic.
